Analysis 01
The strategic choice: acquisition system or operating utility
Both products cover similar categories, but they invite a different first project.
Lodgify’s strongest story is commercial ownership. A host can create a website, accept direct reservations, process payments, synchronise major channels and manage the resulting guest workflow. The product is attractive when the direct site has a real job: capturing branded search, converting repeat guests, supporting campaigns or reducing dependence on marketplaces over time.
Smoobu’s strongest story is practical coordination. It brings reservations and channel conversations together, can automate timed guest messages, supports a direct-booking engine and can create a personalised Guest Guide. For a small operator, that can be a more immediate improvement than launching a complex new marketing channel.
This is not a judgement about which product has “more.” It is a sequencing decision. A host with weak calendar discipline and repeated guest questions should repair operations before investing heavily in acquisition. A host with reliable operations and clear demand for direct bookings may gain more by improving the commercial funnel.
Analysis 02
Website and booking engine: own the funnel deliberately
A direct site succeeds when brand, traffic, availability, trust and payment form one coherent journey.
Lodgify publishes a no-code builder with templates, custom pages, guest reviews, a booking engine and an external widget. That gives the operator room to build a fuller branded presence inside the platform or attach the transactional layer to an existing site. Higher plans add more automation and operational features around the reservation.
Smoobu also supports two paths: embed its booking engine in an existing website or use its own website builder. Its support material notes that the engine connects with calendars and pricing. This can be enough for a host who already has a good site or wants a simple, maintainable booking destination.
Choose by testing the complete funnel. Can a guest understand the property, see total price, trust the policy, pay on mobile and receive the correct follow-up? Can the host change a rate, block a date, issue a refund and trace the transaction without duplicate entry? The best-looking template is irrelevant if the operational back end is brittle.
- Preserve control of the domain and document how content and booking data can be exported.
- Measure mobile conversion steps and page speed with your real photography.
- Test taxes, deposits, add-ons, coupons and cancellation—not only a zero-friction test booking.
Analysis 03
Smoobu’s Guest Guide is more than a digital house manual
It can become the bridge between automated messages and the information a guest needs during each stage of the stay.
Smoobu documents a personal web page for each booking containing directions, rules, Wi-Fi, online check-in, local recommendations, extras and other content. Sections can be shown before arrival, during the stay or after checkout. The guide can also receive guest messages and invite another booking. That time-aware structure is useful because it prevents a single enormous pre-arrival message from carrying the whole experience.
The practical benefit depends on distribution. Smoobu inserts a personalised guide link into automated messages, but channel policies can affect external links and formatting. Airbnb or Booking.com guests may experience the message differently from a direct guest. Test each important channel and keep critical access information available through a fallback route.
Lodgify’s higher plan includes a guest mobile app and its platform connects messages, check-in tools and reservations. If a guest-facing stay hub is important, compare what the guest sees without requiring an app download, how content is localised and how quickly a host can update one property without affecting the rest.
Analysis 04
Messaging quality depends on the channel connection
A central inbox cannot override every rule imposed by Airbnb, Booking.com or an iCal-only connection.
Smoobu explains that Airbnb and Booking.com messages travel through the channels’ own systems when a full connection is used, while direct-booking communication uses email. Formatting, links and attachments may be transformed or restricted by the channel. An iCal connection moves calendar data only and does not carry guest messages.
Lodgify documents API connections for major channels and iCal support for additional sites, alongside a unified inbox and automated workflows that vary by plan. The same evaluation principle applies: list every channel, identify the connection type and test the exact data that moves in each direction.
Create a matrix for calendar availability, rates, restrictions, listing content, reservation details, messages, attachments and cancellations. “Connected” is too vague. The operational risk lives in the field that does not sync or the message that arrives somewhere the team is not watching.
Analysis 05
Choose for the next operating stage, then price the complete stack
Small hosts often overbuy for a future business that never arrives—or underbuy and rebuild six months later.
If the next stage is “run five properties with fewer mistakes,” Smoobu’s combination of channel control, communication, booking engine and guest guide may be the more economical project. If the next stage is “turn our brand and audience into a serious direct channel,” Lodgify’s website and booking infrastructure may justify the larger implementation.
Use current official pricing calculators because plan names, promotions and inclusions can change. Include payment fees, add-ons, domain or website work, third-party pricing tools and the hours required to create content. Then subtract tools that can genuinely be retired—not tools that the team will keep “just in case.”
Revisit the decision at a defined trigger: perhaps ten properties, the first employee, a target share of direct revenue or the first external owner. A good selection includes an exit condition as well as an entry case.
